Billed to be the gateway to Asia, a new mega port is nearing completion on Peru’s Pacific coast. Built by a Chinese state-owned company, the multi-purpose Chancay port is located north of Peru's capital, Lima, and is expected to transform trade between South America and Asia. Dan Collyns reports.
For the third time, Peru will host the APEC summit. This year, it will take place in Lima between November 13th and 15th. I sat down with Peru´s foreign minister Elmer Schialer in New York. We discussed trade between Asia and the Americas, the new Chancay mega port…and his country’s relationship with China.
As we continue to look at infrastructure, we turn to Mexico, where another mega-project was built. This is the Mayan Train, a rail project that promises development to a marginalized region of the country. Alasdair Baverstock took to the tracks…for this story.
APEC has 21 member economies. Mexico officially joined in November of 1993. I met with Mexico's ambassador to the UN, Hector Enrique Vasconcelos. I sat down with him for a one-on-one interview to talk more about the mission of his country at the United Nations as well as trade and international relations.
Chile joined APEC in November of 1994. The South American nation is one of the countries with the most free trade agreements in the world…. it is a top exporter of copper, wood, wine, and lithium. Because of climate change, Chile is now producing something that can keep the country operating during extreme weather: solar energy.
