Caste – a rigid system of social hierarchy determined by birth – is illegal in India and other South Asian countries.
But many believe it persists throughout societies today.
This year, California State University became the first U.S. university system to add caste to its non-discrimination policy.
As CGTN's Mark Niu reports, not everyone agrees with the move.
