“Preventative education is the key strategy in our drug control efforts”

WHAT’S THE ISSUE?

International collaboration is key to solving the world’s addiction issues. Already in 2021, the EU have begun its first official dialogue on drugs with China. It’s hoped this will allow for real cooperation in the fight against drugs and drug addiction.

So, on this week’s The Agenda with Stephen Cole, we look closely at where China stands on the problem of addiction, and what knowledge can be shared to help tackle a global crisis.

MEET THE EXPERT

Shan Yehua is the Acting Director of International Cooperation Division, Office of China National Narcotics Control Commission/Narcotics Control Bureau of Ministry of Public Security.

She has spent many years looking at the issues of drug control and addiction – and details for us the strategies that are working in China, and how closely she’s working with counterparts across the globe.

WHAT DOES SHAN SAY?

Global cooperation is key in the fight against addiction, Shan tells Stephen Cole.

In January of this year, China and the EU launched their first official drug control dialogue: “We exchange drug control policies so that we can learn from each other” she says “The best practice is taking both sides”.

And one of the main weapons in the battle against addiction in China is education. “Preventative education is the key strategy in our drug control efforts” Shan tells Stephen, going on to outline the success of one particular online platform aimed at students. “More than 96 million students have registered on the platform in just two years” she adds.
